A pair of hungry men are accused of nabbing a black swan from a Shanghai park, taking it back home, cooking it and eating it — well half of it anyway.
Recently, workers at Shanghai’s Xujiahui Park noticed that one of the five black swans that call the park home had gone missing. While checking surveillance tape, police discovered footage from April 20th of two men snatching the swan and hurrying away.
Later, police were able to track these two men down — identified as local food delivery couriers surnamed Zhou and Wang. According to Kankanews, The duo told police that on the night in question they had gone to the park to do some fishing, but had been scared away by security patrols.
However, as they were leaving the park, they happened upon a black swan that they decided would satisfy their hunger. On the way back home, the swan mysteriously died. Zhou said that he felt bad about the bird’s death, but didn’t want the animal’s sacrifice to go to waste.
At home, the pair plucked and boiled the swan, leaving it in the freezer overnight. The next day, they cooked it up together with some radishes, but didn’t find the taste to their liking, eventually throwing half of it away.
Zhou and Wang have been arrested by Shanghai police, charged with hunting and killing a species under second-class protection.
That protection hasn’t been doing black swans much good recently. In March, a visitor to a Yangzhou park hopped a fence to steal and stomp on some black swan eggs. The month before that, a sorrowful pair of black swans stopped eating after their eggs were stolen by pair of tourists at a scenic spot near Mount Tai in Shandong province.
