Visitors to the Fuzhou Zoo were less enthralled and more appalled by an animal show on Sunday, watching as a trainer abused a black bear as the animal failed to perform a series of stunts.
In the viral video filmed by one audience member, the trainer is seen leading the bear through an obstacle course in which the bear is supposed to step over a series of hurdles. When the bear instead knocks down three out of the four hurdles, the trainer delivers a strong kick to the animal’s midsection.
According to the man who recorded the video, people in the crowd began crying out “Don’t hit him! Don’t hit him!” as the trainer took the bear through more obstacles, including spinning on a bar and balancing on a giant ball. However, the trainer ignored the audience’s pleas, later throwing the bear’s food on the ground in frustration.
Responding to the controversy surrounding the video, both the trainer and the show have now been suspended.
Outrage at instance of animal cruelty is now becoming more fierce on the Chinese internet. In January, netizens voiced their anger against one Hangzhou zoo caught on tape whipping its tigers, as well as a circus in Hunan that was exposed tying down a tiger so that tourists could take a ride on its back and snap some souvenir photographs.
