A FamilyMart store inside the West Nanjing Road metro station on Line 2 has been closed down after images went viral online yesterday showing a giant rat scurrying around near a shelf of ready-made meals. We know, we are shocked as well.
The images were posted onto Chinese social media by one web user who visited the shop on Tuesday night to buy something to drink, only to notice the enormous rodent scampering about.
On Wednesday, the shop was closed to customers with a sign on the door informing the public that it was undergoing “rectification.” The store’s shelves were mostly empty with Shanghai authorities ordering that all of the food inside the rat-infested FamilyMart be destroyed. Pest control will also pay a visit to disinfect the place.
According a statement from the company, the shop’s ceiling will be rat-proofed and its pipes will be refurbished to prevent rodents from slipping inside. We’re sure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
All in all, this could be the worst thing that has happened inside a FamilyMart since last August when a woman in Taiwan climbed up onto a shop counter, urinated into a cup and then took a long sip.
