On June 1st, Children’s Day in China, yet another tragic escalator accident occurred which ended with one 4-year-old boy having his arm ripped off.
Grainy surveillance footage from a shopping mall in Nanchang, Jiangxi province shows a boy playfully trying to walk up an escalator that is moving in the opposite direction. However, when the boy’s mom catches up with him, he suddenly slips and falls.
The seemingly innocuous accident quickly turns serious when the boy’s arm gets stuck inside the escalator. After frantically trying to pull her son free from the clutches of the escalator, the mother shouts for help. Passersby rush to her aid and press the emergency stop button, but not before the escalator managed to rip the boy’s arm off at the elbow.
Afterward, the 4-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery lasting several hours. In the end, the doctors were able to reattach his arm. However, the poor kid is not out of the woods yet and will need to be kept under surveillance for at least a few weeks to make sure that blood continues to flow to his reattached limb, according to a report by The Paper.

Chinese parents have been living in fear of escalators ever since a July 2015 accident in a Hubei shopping mall when an escalator’s metal plate suddenly gave in beneath a mother and her son. The mom managed to push her young son to safety just before being sucked into the machinery and killed.
That tragic incident seemed to set off an “escalator epidemic” in China with the machines trying to take the hands, fingers and lives of children across the country.
