Traffic police in the city of Jinan have uploaded a video of one cop giving a foreigner a stern talking to after catching him running a red light on his electric scooter. GASP!
The video has become a hit on Chinese social media thanks to the Jinan officer showing off his English-language abilities while dressing the foreigner down. “Can you speak English?” the officer asks. “Do you see this traffic light? It’s red, not green.”
The expat politely responds to the cop’s queries, telling him that he’s an American English teacher and that while he doesn’t have his passport with him, he does have a picture of it, punctuating each answer with a “Yes, sir.”
Also to his credit, he manages not to burst out laughing when the officer asks him if this is how he crosses an intersection in America.
Fortunately, in the end, the foreigner is not thrown in the gulag, but let go with a warning. However, the video has turned him into the object of ridicule among Chinese netizens.
“This guy is really nervous. Every time he speaks he says ‘sir.’ Probably, when you are stopped by police in America, you’re in danger of getting knocked to the ground with the butt of a gun,” writes one netizen, apparently unfamiliar with the concept of showing respect towards authorities.
At the same time, Weibo users have cheered the cop for his English-language skills, urging him to step in and teach the American guy’s class.

Currently, the city of Jinan is in the midst of a regular crack down on traffic violations. Perhaps, they should follow the example set by Shanghai last year and send foreigners to a seminar to teach them about the rules of the road in China.
