Doctors in Shanghai relieved one man from the mother of all stomach aches last week, removing 13 kilograms of feces-filled “megacolon” from his body in an operation that saved his life.
The patient, a 22-year-old man with the alias “Zhou Hai,” arrived at Shanghai’s Tenth People’s Hospital on Thursday with his belly so bloated that he looked like a pregnant woman. Doctors said that he struggled to breathe and couldn’t help but moan in pain, The Paper reported.
Zhou was able to tell doctors that over the past three days, his belly had grown bigger and bigger until now he could no longer stand the pain. Doctors quickly diagnosed him with a particularly undesirable condition called “megacolon,” in which your colon becomes dilated, bringing your bowel movements to a stop.
Doctors also learned that Zhou had been suffering from constipation since he was born and had been forced to use regular laxatives and enemas for his entire life. While his parents didn’t think much of the ailment, eventually it turned serious.
Following a three-hour operation, doctors were able to save Zhou’s life, extracting a 76-centimeter long section of his colon that was filled with 13 kilograms of feces.
Later, doctors also discovered the source of Zhou’s problems, diagnosing him with a birth defect called Hirschsprung’s disease that results in missing nerve cells in the colon that prevent the organ from contracting normally, causing blockages in the large intestine.
