Police in Jiangsu province recently rescued hundreds of cats from ending up as someone’s dinner.
Officers in the city of Zhenjiang caught one man surnamed Sun as he was loading cramped cages full of kitties into the back of a truck on Sunday. The cats were packed in tightly together and near death from lack of water. Later, police found a shed where the man was keeping the rest of his stockpile of cats, all of which were slowly dying from the heat in squalid conditions.
In total, the man had more than 500 cats locked away, according to NetEase.
Police had been on the lookout for the catnapper following reports from one local man who suspected that his pet cat had been snatched up by a stranger.
Sun reportedly used caged birds to lure in cats, both domestic and stray. After catching them, he would sell them to local restaurants, making 30 RMB a feline on the transaction. He had been engaged in this trade for some time.
After the bust, officers called on local residents to come and identify their missing pets. It’s not clear if Sun will face any charges.
