A 19-year-old British man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal and random killing of a Chinese grandfather.
“I fucked some chink up,” Nathan Richardson texted his friends after kicking 67-year-old Xu Wenqing to death, while still under the influence of a drug binge that he went on at a New Year’s Eve house party the previous night.
Xu and his wife had been visiting their daughter who lives in Preston, Lancashire, the Guardian reports. Xu was out on a morning jog when he was ambushed by Richardson at around 8:30 a.m., beaten, kicked, stripped and then dragged through the streets of a quiet neighborhood on the morning of New Year’s Day.
A pair of workers at a local community center noticed the scene — horrified that what they thought at first was a drunk moving a roll of carpet was in fact a man being dragged around by his genitals — and ran over to intervene.
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to stop Richardson before he kicked the elderly man unconscious, delivering some serious injuries to his cranium. Xu would die two hours after being brought into the hospital. Doctors said that he suffered from around 28 injuries, including broken teeth and bleeding in the brain.
The brutal ambush occurred just hours after Richardson had posted a photo of himself on Facebook, wishing family and friends a happy New Year. At the party the previous night, he had been drinking snider, snorting cocaine, doing ecstasy and smoking cannabis.
After beating Xu, Richardson sent a series of chilling text messages to his friends: “Goin jail. Think I killed sum1… F**ked sum ch**k up. Bodied him. I think pure crime scene – his head’s gone.”
Later, Richardson went online to learn more about the incident, telling a friend afterward that:
“I’ve killed someone its unnatural what I’ve done… I’ve just done some guy I backhanded him and he weren’t moving, I have done it… I kicked and stamped his head a few times. I pulled his pants down and pulled him by his balls.”
Previously, Richardson had already managed to rack up 45 offences on his record, including for assault and battery, criminal damage, assault on police, and drunk and disorderly conduct.
In court, he admitted to the murder and was sentenced earlier this week to life in prison, ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years, according to British law. His friend was also sentenced to two years and nine months in jail for helping Richardson to wash his blood-stained clothes following the attack.
Both Xu wife’s and daughter were present in court for the sentencing. After reading out his verdict, the judge added that:
“Such is the stress that this family have found it difficult to put into words the impact of his death upon them, but it is clear to me from Mrs Xu, as she is present in court and the distress written on her face, that the impact upon her and her daughter simply cannot be calculated.”
