While Chinese subways can often seem like damned and cruel places, there is still room left for some human decency, as demonstrated recently by one young man in Chengdu.
Completely absorbed in his phone, the guy was sitting down on the Chengdu subway when a man in a wheelchair came on board the train. Without hesitation, the young man steadied the wheelchair with a hand and a foot, all without taking his eyes off of his phone. According to witnesses, he stayed in this position for several stops.
The Chengdu Metro has posted a photo of this act of kindness onto its official Weibo page, where it has gone viral, tallying over 100,000 likes with netizens praising the young guy for his thoughtfulness. Though some have also suggested that perhaps he could have even helped someone else out by offering up his “warm seat.”
This month, the Chengdu Metro has posted a series of photos showing similar acts of kindness occuring on its carriages, including one of a kid using his hand as a pillow for his worn-out mom:
Along with some snapshots of an elderly man lacing up his wife’s shoe:
As the charitable acts pile up, some pessmisitic netizens have grown suspicious, accusing the metro of faking these instances, while others have just wished that the subway in their city was filled with the same sort of altruistic spirit — rather than people who crap their pants and shake the turd out onto the station floor or couples playing grab-ass.
