On Tuesday morning at around 5 am, Hengdian World Studios caught fire, though no one seemed to be all that alarmed about it.
Sometimes known as “Chinawood,” the enormous film studio/park located amid acres of farmland in central Zhejiang province is known for its massive, full-scale replicas of historic sites like the Old Summer Palace and Forbidden City. Over the years, numerous Chinese movies have been filmed at Hengdian, for example, Zhang Yimou used the replica imperial palace there in his film Hero.
So you can see why residents might not think much about a little fire.
“Because they are always shooting movies around Hengdian, probably everyone thought it was just a film shoot, so they didn’t call the police,” one woman told reporters.
But, after a while, with flames still raging, someone apparently did call emergency services. Firefighters arrived at Hengdian at around 7 am and successfully extinguished the fire. No one was hurt in the blaze.
