One Spanish man stumbled upon one heck of a way to get kicked out of China last week after being caught having sex in public with a young Chinese woman.
Though, judging from photos and videos of the moonlight tryst, it wasn’t exactly difficult to “catch” the couple who were drunkenly going at it on the side of a road in downtown Chengdu in front of a crowd of onlookers. In a censored video, published by the Beijing Times, some of the passersby can be heard cheering on the exhibitionist couple (Jiāyóu!), while others tell them to get a room.
The couple are then seen being led away by police. The Chinese woman defiantly tells officers in Mandarin that “we are together,” while the 25-year-old Spanish man, named “David,” drunkenly slurs out “I don’t know” before stumbling through a sentence of broken English and Chinese.
On Weibo, Chengdu police announced early on Saturday that David had been detained for 10 days and would be deported back to Spain following his release.
The viral incident has provided the perfect storm of lurid details for those on Chinese social media who like to rail against “loose” women and “trashy” foreigners. What’s on Weibo provides a nice breakdown of the online discourse:
Roughly, there are two sides in the debate; those people who blame the girl for her behavior, calling her a ‘prostitute’, and those who berate the foreigner, saying he is ‘foreign scum’ taking advantage of a drunk Chinese girl.
There are also many people who denounce the entire scene, including those cheering on the couple. “They are all like wild dogs,” some say.
One person writes on Weibo: “As a person from Chengdu, I find this shameful. As a person from China, I also find this shameful. Those people cheering are all good-for-nothings! That woman has no self-respect and no self-dignity. Those foreigners just think that Chinese women are cheap and they treat them as toys, and this is the reason why! (..) It’s infuriating!”
Back in March, one foreigner, claiming to be an “American” English teacher in China, stirred up similar controversy after starring in a promotional video for a sex toys company in which he bragged about how easy it was for him to hook up with Chinese women. “They are so beautiful and they are really into foreigners,” he said. “So it’s great.”
