A man has been arrested by police in Shenzhen after carrying out a terrifying cleaver attack at a local Walmart that killed two people and injured nine more on Sunday night.
The 30-year-old suspect, surnamed Jiang, was detained by police at around 9 p.m. last night following his rampage. In a statement, police said that Jiang had acted alone and that he was unemployed. Jiang is a migrant worker originally from Chongqing. His family, who lost contact with him years ago, say that he has a mental illness.
Shenzhen police said that Jiang had answered questions with a clear mind and that they were investigating the crime as well as Jiang’s mental state.
Images and videos of the aftermath of the attack have gone viral on Chinese social media today. Graphic content follows:
While China restricts guns, cleaver and knife attacks are an all-too-common occurrence around the country. Last year, seven people were injured in a bloody knife attack at a Shenzhen bus station.
