A foreigner in Beijing is being praised on Chinese social media for showing a scrap collector a bit of human kindness by helping him pick up his bottles that had been scattered to the street by the wind.
According to a resident who filmed the scene from his window on Tuesday, the weather outside at the time was very windy, causing some of the plastic bottles that the scrap collector had gathered up to scatter across the bike lane.
While many passersby took notice of this unfortunate incident, only one man actually stopped to help. After seeing what happened, the foreigner promptly jumped into the bike lane to aid the man in picking up the bottles and placing them back in his bag.
Chinese Weibo users have cheered the foreigner for his thoughtfulness and willingness to act. “This kind of foreigner should definitely be on the A-level!” wrote one netizen, referring to recently-instituted expat ranking system in China.
Meanwhile, others have drawn big conclusions from this small act of kindness. “This just goes to show that foreigners’ ‘suzhi’ (quality) is higher than Chinese,” commented another Weibo user.
However, other netizens have argued that the only reason that this incident is getting any attention is because the man was a foreigner. “If this was a Chinese person, would you still be glorifying him so lavishly?” asked a web user.
