China is currently celebrating a decisive victory for the country’s top swimming star, Sun Yang, over his hated arch-rival, Mack Horton, who had caused Sun to weep tears of defeat during last year’s Olympics.
At the world swimming championships in Budapest over the weekend, Sun soundly defeated Horton by nearly two-and-a-half seconds to win 400m freestyle gold, his 8th gold medal at the championships overall.
This result was much different than in Rio last year in the 400m freestyle when Horton managed to beat Sun by just 0.13 seconds after calling him a “drug cheat” before the match, causing Sun to break down into tears. Horton’s comments quickly caused some 1.3 billion Chinese people to turn on him along with some poor innocent British guy named Mark Horton.
However, Horton has not backed down from his criticism of Sun, who was banned from competition for three months back in 2014 after testing positive for a banned stimulant. Upon arriving at the world finals, Horton said that he did not think that he and Sun shared a personal rivalry.
“I think it is a rivalry between clean athletes and athletes who have tested positive,” he told reporters.
Later, the pair exchanged an awkward handshake on the medal podium.
Meanwhile, we are just waiting for the triumphal return of Ning Zetao.
