Chelsea winger Kenedy has been sent home early from the club’s pre-season tour through Asia in the wake of some offensive posts that he made on social media last week which “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.”
Before Chelsea’s match with Arsenal inside Beijing’s Bird Nest Stadium on Saturday, the 21-year-old Brazillian winger posted two videos on his Instagram account with captions in Portuguese that roughly translated to “fuck China” and “wake up China, idiot” in reference to a dozing security guard.
While he quickly removed the posts as they began to attract attention, the damage had already been done. On Saturday, boos rang out across Beijing whenever his name was announced or he was involved in a play. People’s Daily even published an editorial which stated that “China does not welcome a player like this, nor does China welcome a team like this.”
On Sunday, Chelsea finally issued a formal apology for the posts, promising that Kenedy would be “strongly reprimanded and disciplined” for his actions.
Even though Chelsea has now moved on to Singapore, the club is apparently still feeling the heat from Kenedy’s posts, and, on Tuesday, it decided to just send their player-turned-pariah back home. Reportedly, he has already been fined by the team, but it’s not clear if he will face any other disciplinary actions.
