Work appears to be progressing rather well on the new Zaha Hadid-designed airport being built in southern Beijing with some pretty photos emerging online of what will soon become the world’s largest aviation hub.
According to Hadid’s design, the Beijing Daxing International Airport will have five graceful limbs that extend out from a central core, covering a total area of some 313,000 meters. Each of these limbs will showcase a different theme taken from Chinese culture: silk, tea, porcelain, farmlands and gardens.
Here’s what the airport will look like when all is said and done.
Set to open in 2019, the airport will have four runways and will be able to handle 72 million passengers and 2 millions tons of air cargo each year by 2025. Located 46 kilometers south of Beijing’s city center, the new airport is aimed at reducing pressure on the city’s already extremely overburdened Beijing Capital International Airport, located in the northeast suburbs.
While Hadid’s design for the massive airport has earned international acclaim, Chinese netizens couldn’t help but notice last year that its interior does look a lot like a vagina.
