Netizens across China have been touched by a heartbreaking note that an 8-year-old boy wrote to his overworked father’s boss.
The note, written by hand, included a desperate plea for his father to be allowed to take some time off work in order to have a much-needed vacation as the summer draws to a close.
Apparently, the boy’s father works in Beijing in an IT department and has been too busy to take his son on a holiday. The young boy evidently had grown quite exasperated, especially considering the fact that all his friends were going away on trips with their families.
“The summer vacation has come. [My friend] Xiaoming is now on holiday with his parents and I want to go on vacation, too,” SCMP translates. “But Dad always says he’s busy at work. Can you give my father a few days leave? Xiaoming says people who don’t use the summer holidays to travel are dumb.”
The father of the boy said that he had, in fact, promised that he would take his son on a trip, but that his work schedule had got the better of him. On Tuesday morning, his son handed him his letter, instructing him to only read it once he got to his office.
“I’ve been quite occupied at work and couldn’t keep my word,” the father admitted. “He must be quite upset, so he came up with this idea.”
When the father read the note, he decided not to hand it over to his boss and instead did the next best thing: he posted it online. Quickly the note went viral on Chinese social media with netizens across the country commenting in about the importance of spending time with one’s family and not working too much.
A happy ending, you ask? Well, the boy’s father says that he has decided to take his son on a trip by the end of the summer. Let’s see if he sticks to his word this time.
