Prepare yourselves for talk of China’s “Fifth Great New Invention” because Beijing’s metro has just gone cardless!
Commuters in Beijing can now swipe their way into the subway system using only their smartphones through a new payment app called Yikatong which allows users to recharge their accounts online, meaning that never again will they have to bother with troublesome metro cards.
Well, just so long as they are not iPhone users. While the new system works for most Android phones, Apple is not included. That’s because Apple prefers to be the only mobile payment service that its users can take advantage of, refusing to grant access to third-party apps. A business decision that appears to be hurting the company in China.
The new system was first rolled out on one Beijing route in June, attracting some 200,000 users. Now, we just have to wait for it to make its way to Shanghai.
