An episode of long-term, unrequited love ended in tragedy earlier this year after a spurned and jealous man threw the object of his affection off a high-rise balcony to her death.
The 27-year-old man told a court in Hangzhou on Wednesday that he had had a crush on his victim for the last eight years, ever since they were classmates together in high school. After he left China to go to college in the US, the two remained in touch and she regularly kept him up to date on how her life was going.
Over the years, he bought her various luxury gifts, like designer handbags and expensive jewelry, but none of those presents were able to win her heart. When he brought up dating, she said that they first needed to get to know each other better.
Hoping to do just that, in February, the man decided to abandon his life in the US and take a flight to Hangzhou to live with his beloved. The two became housemates in the city, along with another woman, but things did not go as the man had planned. Soon, he discovered that there was a framed photo of another man near her bedside.
The man told the court that throughout his eight-year courtship, she had never allowed him to take one photo with her. Afterward, he began to search online the terms: “suicide,” “jump off building” and “sentencing for deliberate murder.”
Things only then got worse on the night of March 20th, when he overheard her speaking on the phone with someone about him, talking about how much she hated him.
That night, the man said that he could barely sleep. In the morning, he rushed into the woman’s room, picked her up and threw her off the 19th floor balcony.
The court has yet to render a verdict in the case.
