On the opposite end of the spectrum from brutal kangaroo “mercy killings,” a heartwarming video has gone viral on Chinese social media presenting the story of a homeless man and his dog.
In the video, the homeless man surnamed Zhang speaks to a passerby while washing his dog in a public fountain in Shanghai. Zhang explains that when he found the dog it was seriously injured. Knowing that he couldn’t just leave the two-month-old pup to die on the street, he took it to a vet’s office where he paid 200 yuan for treatment.
To put that into context, Zhang says that by collecting garbage and scraps on the street, he probably makes 20 or 30 yuan a day.
Unsure if anyone else would want to adopt the dog, Zhang decided to keep it, naming it Dian Dian (点点), because of how small it was when he found it. They’ve been together ever since.
