A middle school teacher in Anhui province has been made to go to his students’ homes and apologize to them one-by-one after being caught on video last week slapping them in the face in front of class on the very first day of school.
The video, which went viral on Chinese social media on Sunday, shows the teacher slapping student after student beside his podium as the sound of the slaps ring out across the classroom on the kids’ first day back from summer vacation.
According to the Beijing News, the teacher had asked the students to write some classical poetry from memory. For each mistake, the kids were slapped in the face at the front of the classroom. A colleague at the middle school located in Hefei said that the slap-happy teacher takes his job and the students’ test results “too seriously,” resulting in the brutal punishment.
While initial reports said that the teacher had slapped some 20 kids, it turns out that the number was actually 38. He has been made to go door-to-door to apologize to each of them personally.
“What’s the use of an apology? They should get to slap him back,” wrote one Weibo user.
