On August 31st, a man arrived at a police station in Hangzhou claiming that he had been robbed while returning home that night on his electric scooter.
After listening to the man’s story, police were suspicious. The victim was always quick with an answer and didn’t seem a tad nervous after allegedly being robbed. Officers reviewed the surveillance tape, finding that during his commute home, the man had not been approached, much less robbed.
Back at the police station, the man, surnamed Cai, was forced to come clean. He told police that he had claimed to have been robbed because he was tired of handing over his paycheck to his wife.
In the past, he had told her that he had lost his paycheck or that he already had spent all his wages, but he knew that eventually he would have to think of a new story — though it’s not clear why he also decided to tell that story to police.
In the end, Cai was detained for 10 days and fined 500 yuan for making the false report. His monthly salary is not mentioned.
