Yesterday, the world lost one of the greats — Basi (巴斯) is dead at 37.
The world’s oldest panda in captivity until only recently, Basi lived a full and fulfilling life. After being rescued from a frozen Sichuan river as a cub in 1984, she was set up at her new home in Fuzhou’s Straits Giant Panda Research and Exchange Center. She would go on to visit the San Diego Zoo and serve as the model for the 1990 Asian Games mascot.
After reaching the equivalent of more than a hundred human years, Basi passed away peacefully at her home in Fuzhou on Wednesday. The park later held a memorial for her, calling her “an angel of friendship both at home and abroad.”
