BlackTail in Manhattan.
BlackTail, the best new bar in America, is popping up in Shanghai for five days starting tonight. In town until Saturday, September 23, the New York-based, Cuban-inspired bar is taking over The Ritz Bar & Lounge at The Portman Ritz-Carlton and recreating its Manhattan location right down to its tiniest detail.
BlackTail at the Portman Ritz-Carlton.
Recognized as the Best New American Cocktail Bar at this year’s Spirited Awards in the US, which is like the Oscars for cocktail bars, BlackTail takes its cues from American bars that moved to Cuba during the Prohibition era. The interior features a giant reproduction of John Vanderlyn’s “Landing of Columbus” painting, and their drinks pay tribute to the island’s cocktail scene from the 1920s to 1950s.
Nick Rolin and Jesse Vida.
For Shanghai, BlackTail has created a menu divided into five sections – highball, old fashioned, punch, cocktail, and sour – with eight drinks in total that reflect their drinks list back home. Included is their signature rum and coke topped with a dose of champagne, and all drinks will be made by BlackTail head bartender Jesse Vida and bartender Nick Rolin. The duo will be helming the pop up the entire time, so rest assured you’ll be transported to Cuba via New York in a matter of sips.
