Every morning in the Anhui city of Anqing, residents can’t help but smile when they spot a man taking his morning walk, followed closely by his pet duck.
The man, Sheng Yonggao, has recently become a bit of an internet celebrity after photos and videos of his morning routine were posted online. A reporter recently tracked down Sheng to find out the story behind his unusual pet.
It turns out that three years ago, Sheng and his wife were given 20 baby ducks by a friend. Sheng gave away all but four of these ducks to neighbors. Then, over the next six months, three of the ducks died, leaving only a single duck left.
At first, Sheng said that he wasn’t much of a fan of raising ducks, but, as time went by, he became more and more attached to this lone duck that seemed to like to follow him around. Soon, the duck became his morning exercise partner, waddling close behind him for 3km each day, much to the amusement of locals.
Sheng confirmed that he and his wife now have no intention of ever eating their beloved pet, hoping that it will keep them company as they grow old.
Earlier this month, an elderly woman in the northwestern city of Changchun became similarly famous online after photos of her taking her 50 kg pet tortoise out for its daily walk went viral online. As you might expect, the woman is known around town as “tortoise grandma.”
