Natural births on the street appear to be all the rage these days in China with a shocking video going viral on Chinese social media showing a pregnant woman pulling her pants down and letting her baby fall to the pavement.
In the rather graphic video, which was filmed at a wet market in Jiangxi’s Le’an County, a horde of older ladies can be heard shouting advice at the pregnant woman who has suddenly gone into labor while out grocery shopping. As the moment approaches, the women urge her to pull down her pants faster.
Only seconds after the woman pulls her pants down, the baby falls down onto the ground with a thud and a cry, shocking onlookers.
From there, the miracle of life only gets messier as the woman is seen squatting in shock and pain as her newborn son squirms around in a pool of blood and amniotic fluid.
The surrounding aunties and grannies are heard shouting advice, including one who worries that the child will be strangled by its umbilical cord, but all seem reluctant to jump to action.
First, one woman tries to slide a piece of cardboard underneath the mother.
Then, the mother grabs her purse and moves it away from her bloody newborn.
Finally, about 45 seconds after the birth, one woman appears to check to make sure that the infant is not being strangled to death by its umbilical cord before backing away.
More shouting and suggestions are then heard from the dozens of women who have gathered around to watch the spectacle as one woman draws out a packet of tissues.
At last, someone steps forward to help. The elderly woman, Huang Jiulian, reportedly has experience with childbirth, and quickly set about tending to the baby — first laying him on some cardboard and then on his mother’s pants.
According to Kankanews, Huang later cut off the umbilical cord and cleaned the child with her clothing while waiting for medical workers to arrive. She then accompanied the mother and son to the hospital to make sure that they were alright, buying them milk powder and clothes.
Fortunately, the newborn is reportedly in good health along with his mom, though she will need to stay in the hospital for a few extra days for observation.
The woman has already given birth to two daughters.

This is (at least) the third time this kind of thing has happened in China this month. Early in September, a Guangdong woman was spotted going into labor on the street on her way home from grocery shopping. While an ambulance arrived after she had given birth, the woman declined to hop inside. Instead, she walked home with a bag of groceries in one hand and her newborn child in the other.
Last week, passersby were photographed helping out another woman whose water had broke while she was riding her electric scooter home in Hangzhou. Afterward, that woman accepted a ride from an ambulance.
