One 4-year-old boy has finally started going to school after being rejected by dozens of kindergartens because of his appearance.
Back in January 2015, at his hometown in Sichuan, little Bei Bei was the victim of a terrible accident which severely burned his face and hands, leaving him with many scars. Through the love and care of his family, Bei Bei was eventually able to overcome the psychological wounds of the accident; however, when it came time to start going to school, there was a problem.
Bei Bei was rejected by kindergarten after kindergarten with administrators explaining that they were worried that the little boy’s appearance would scare the other kids.
More than a year passed and still no solution emerged. Bei Bei’s father said that his son would tell him every day that he wanted to start going to school, and he didn’t know what to tell Bei Bei. Eventually, the dad decided to go public about their situation, penning an emotional plea that quickly caught the attention of people from across the country.
Afterward, one kindergarten in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province said that they would be happy to accept little Bei Bei, adding that they wouldn’t charge him any tuition.
This week, Bei Bei started school. Videos and images have gone viral on Chinese social media showing the little boy being introduced to his new classmates, led by the hand by a teacher.
An event was held to welcome Bei Bei to the school with all students attending. Bei Bei brought with him a bag of candy and handed one to each of his peers as a way of making friends.
Another clip shows a teacher encouraging students to touch Bei Bei’s hand — as Bei Bei looks a bit shy.
The school’s principal says that she hopes that over time Bei Bei will come to be seen as just another normal kid. In the meantime, the school has also launched a fundraising drive, hoping to raise enough money so that Bei Bei can receive plastic surgery.
