Some days it is a bit easier to get what one Chengdu rapper was talking about in his angry diss track “Stupid Laowai.”
Because there’s really nothing to be said in defense of some foreigners in China who swipe phones from shopkeepers or get kicked out of the country for having sex in public. Drunken laowai wreaking havoc during a night of partying is also something that locals sometimes have to put up with.
The most recent case of someone giving foreigners a bad name in the Middle Kingdom occurred during one night last week at a Beijing street corner where an angry expat was filmed trashing a shared bike in Chaoyang District.
According to eyewitnesses, the foreigner first slammed the bicycle to the ground before trampling all over it. Once he apparently felt the bike had had enough, he picked it up, took a running start and flung the bicycle onto the sidewalk.
What exactly set him off is a mystery — according to passersby at the scene, the bike wasn’t blocking his way, nor did he seem drunk at the time.
Nevertheless, neither his companions nor anyone present tried to stop him. One witness told reporters that she and her female friends had wanted to say something, but decided against it because the foreigner and his friends “looked very strong.”
Following his altercation with the unfortunate bike, the man walked away with his company like nothing had happened.
Of course, this guy isn’t the first to lose his temper over China’s bike-sharing explosion. Earlier this month in Chengdu, a woman was filmed taking bicycles crowding a bus stop and placing them out on the street — proclaiming to the world that if she has to be inconvenienced, then so too shall everyone else.
And then there’s this “hero.”
