The Nutcracker Ballet @ Shanghai Culture Square
The Russian National Ballet Theatre puts on the famous Nutcracker ballet. Adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, it premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1892, and has remained one of the most well-known ballet performances ever since. In Chinese with English subtitles.

Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land @ Theater Above
Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land has been regarded as the most widely acclaimed masterpiece of Taiwanese playwright and director Stan Lai and his Performance Workshop. It consists of two plays: one a bawdy retelling of a classic Chinese fable, the other a poignant story of a couple separated in the wake of China’s 1949 revolution, and numerous stars have performed in it since it’s premier in 1986. Shalanaya 2017 @ Dianshan Lake Resort
Shalanaya is an outdoor music and arts festival with a psychedelic bent. There will be three stages playing psytrance, techno, and chill-out, together with yoga classes, workshops, fire performances, and a market. Expect non-stop entertainment from over 60 local and international DJs and bands.

Mulan – Shadow Play @ Ciro’s Performing Arts Theater
Shanghai Puppet Theater puts on the timeless fable “Mulan,” a story about a girl who disguises herself as a man and goes to war in place of her elderly father. This shadow play version includes stunning sets, sentimental music, and fantasy elements combined with filmmaking techniques and modern visual effects that breathe fresh life into an age-old art form.
