While hundreds of millions are celebrating China’s Golden Week by going out and seeing the sights, one 5th-grader is spending the holiday at home, helping his parents keep their house and the streets clean.
Video has gone viral on Chinese social media showing Xiao Jiang, a 12-year-old boy from Deyang in Sichuan province, sweeping the streets clean of rubbish during the extended holiday week. Jiang’s parents are both sanitation workers, so while on break from school he helps them out however he can.
In addition, a reporter learned from the family’s neighbors, that the kid also takes care of all the household chores, including cooking and cleaning, while he’s on break.
When asked if he would take his son somewhere fun for the holiday, Jiang’s father replied that they had no time for that.
On Weibo, netizens are infuriated at the reporter for asking such a dumb question of an obviously impoverished family. While in recent years, China’s middle class has been growing, allowing more and more people the opportunity to travel, there still exists a widening wealth gap in the country that leaves many behind, working hard over the holidays.
Meanwhile, after watching the video, one parent sighed at the work ethic of her son, who is spending Golden Week playing the popular mobile game King of Glory.
