On Thursday afternoon, visitors to Shaanxi’s scenic Hukou Waterfall were horrified when one visitor climbed over safety railing and tried to throw himself into the roaring waterfall.
Fortunately, the man landed on a rock at the bottom that was just 20 centimeters away from fast-flowing rapids that would surely have swept him away to his death. In about 10 minutes time, park staff had managed to rescue the man.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital. While his life is reported to not be in danger at this time, he did fracture his spine in the fall.
Hukou Waterfall is the largest waterfall on the Yellow River and the second largest in China. It draws tourists from around the country each year with its roaring and muddy waters. During flood season, it occasionally closes to tourists.
