While the elderly in China are frequently criticized for fighting over seats on public transportation like it’s a matter of life or death, one granny is being celebrated this week for giving up her seat to her own elder.
On October 9th, in the Guizhou capital of Guiyang, a 90-year-old man staggered onto a city bus. Immediately, an 80-year-old jumped up to offer him her seat. A fellow commuter caught the heartwarming exchange between the two seniors as the woman explained that she was compelled to offer up her seat because “I’m a bit younger than you.”
The grandma’s act of kindness has touched hearts across China, helping to counteract dirty deeds done by other members of her age cohort in the name of sitting down. Last month, video went viral on Chinese social media showing an auntie sitting on a young guy’s lap in the Nanjing subway after he refused to give her his seat.
