After his wife, Song Qinghuan, fell into a coma induced by a medical accident in 2001, Zhang Yuhua, a folk singer from Liaocheng, Shandong Province, sang love songs by her bedside every day for six years. Eventually she emerged from the coma with a dream: to climb Mount Tai, one of the Five Great Mountains of China, located not far from the couple’s village. Though Song made a partial recovery, she never regained full mobility and is now wheelchair-bound.
On Sunday, Zhang helped Song realize her long-held dream, local news reported. With the help of several friends, he carried her on his back for eight hours to the mountain’s 1,533-meter peak. To train for the occasion, Zhang lifted 10 kg sandbags every day.
At the time of the accident, Zhang was only 28 years old and the couple had just given birth to a son. Now 44, he told reporters by the South Gate to Heaven at the mountain’s summit, “Persisting all these years has really been incredibly difficult for me. I just want to show my wife that she has love in her life, that she has a family, that we will, of course, create loving memories together.”
