“The Library of Babel,” a short story written by Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges describes a library-like universe composed of an indefinite number of books and bookshelves. If such a library existed in our universe, perhaps it’d look something like the Tianjin Binhai Library.
Designed by Dutch firm MVRDV, the library opened recently in the city’s Binhai Cultural Center and looks like just about the coolest place you could read a book in China.
The futuristic five-story library occupies an area of 33,700 square meters and is filled with 1.2 million books in a space straight out of a sci-fi novel, which even includes a gigantic “eye.”
We just hope that this library has done a better job of sourcing its books than did China’s “most beautiful library” which was shut down last month after investigators discovered its shelves filled with counterfeit and explicit material.
