The story of one elderly man trying to find his deceased wife to give her a mooncake has moved hearts and moistened eyes across China.
On October 22nd, the man, in his eighties, was spotted sitting beside a breakfast stall in Xi’an, muttering to himself the words “wife” and “mooncake.” Concerned passersby tried to ask the man who he was and where he was going, but in his responses, the man was incoherent.
Police soon arrived and talked with the man who told them that he had come here alone. “I miss my wife, I’m afraid she’ll go hungry,” he said to the officers. Inside the man’s pocket was a single mooncake that he said he was trying to give to his wife, though he didn’t know where she was.
Eventually, police were able to contact the man’s family and were shocked to learn that the elderly man’s wife had been dead now for three years. Trying desperately to find her and give her a mooncake, he had wandered four or five kilometers away from home on his walking stick before becoming lost.
On Weibo, netizens wrote that what the man and his wife had together must have been true love. “He may have forgotten almost everything, but he has not forgotten about her. They are still together for a lifetime,” one net user commented.
