Back in June 2013, Gu Xue graduated from college and was preparing to pursue a career of her own. Two months later, her father became ill. Very ill.
Gu made the difficult decision to move back to her hometown of Yicheng in Hubei, knowing full well that it could mean the end to her relationship with her boyfriend. Indeed, Gu’s boyfriend soon broke up with her.
Her father suffers from acute meningitis which has left him unable to move around on his own. For the last four years, Gu, now 26 years old, has taken patient care of him.
While she despaired at first about her situation, Gu said that she eventually realized what was really important in life.
“I can find another boyfriend, but I only have one father,” she said, adding that as long as she has a father, she has a family.
On Weibo, netizens from across China have praised Gu for her compassion and sacrifice, giving up everything to care for her dad. Recently, several other filial sons and daughters have made headlines in the country, including one young woman who brought her father with her to university and a middle-aged man who has been dressing up like his dead sister for the past two decades to help ease his grieving mother’s mind.
