What’s in a name? Well, quite a lot actually, particularly if you happen to be a shopkeeper who’s fortunate enough to share the same name as one of the world’s most popular online payment platforms.
Meet Zhi Fubao (支付宝), a 56-year-old grocery store owner in rural Shandong province whose business prospects are looking up of late. Zhi’s name is identical to the Chinese name of Alipay. Hoping to cash in on that association, Zhi has recently renamed his village shop to the “Zhi Fubao Store,” turning him into an overnight internet celebrity with his face and ID card splashed across media outlets around the country.
Inside his little shop, Zhi, of course, encourages shoppers to pay for their transactions using Alipay. He says that one day, he hopes to meet Alibaba CEO Jack Ma. Though, if “Mini Ma” can’t even get a meeting, we’re not sure we like his chances.
However, at the moment, Zhi says that his newfound celebrity hasn’t changed his life much. He just receives a few extra customers who come in only to meet the man named Alipay.
