Following her son’s engagement, a mother in Henan’s Ningling county committed suicide last week, allegedly because she couldn’t afford the betrothal gift that the bride’s family was asking for.
Prior to the wedding, the bride’s family said that they wanted a car. Unfortunately, this was apparently not something that the groom’s family could afford. Afterward, the groom’s mother sank into a deep depression, ending with her jumping into a river and killing herself.
Video has gone viral on Chinese social media showing a group of people crowded over the dead woman’s body by the riverside. Upon seeing his wife’s corpse, the woman’s husband also tries to throw himself into the river, but is rescued by his son and police officers.
On Weibo, most Chinese netizens have said that they do not blame the bride’s family, reasoning that a car is not an unreasonable betrothal gift. Instead, they have wondered why the burden of buying the vehicle was not more on the son, and why he could not simply wait until his family was more stable to get married.
“I blame the son. If you can’t be financially independent, then you shouldn’t get married,” argued one net user.
However, a few Weibo users also pointed out that, due to China’s infamous gender gap, finding a suitable bride in the rural part of the country can often be a difficult task that is only getting more and more expensive. A fact that this mother likely knew all too well and may have caused her to take her own life.
