In yet another heartbreaking tale from the Chinese countryside, a couple of left-behind kids spent three hours last week clinging to the undercarriage of a bus in a dangerous attempt at seeing their mom and dad.
The two young boys, aged eight or nine, had been left behind with relatives in their rural home village in western Guangxi while their parents went to the city to find work. Last Thursday, they skipped school and headed to the local bus station where they managed to conceal themselves underneath a bus headed for the county seat. A bus ticket would have cost them 32 yuan each.
China News reports that after going about 90 kilometers in three hours, the bus came to a stop at a station where the two stowaways were discovered by security workers. They were covered in mud, but unharmed.
Afterward, the boys’ school was called and someone was dispatched to pick them up and bring them back home.
Even if the boys had managed to reach the county seat, they would still have had a long way to go before reuniting with their parents. They told station workers that their father and mother worked in neighboring Guangdong province, but they didn’t know where that was. They were hoping to figure out how to get there when they reached a bigger city.
