Former US President Barack Obama is currently in China where he’s set to meet with his old buddy Xi Jinping. We just hope that Trump doesn’t get too jealous.
Obama spoke yesterday at a business forum in Shanghai that was hosted by the Global Alliance of SMEs. The event was closed to the media and top tickets reportedly cost a bundle.
His visit to China is part of a five-day trip that will also see him heading to India and France, where he will meet with some of his former peers. His meeting with Xi was to take place in Beijing on Wednesday and may have already happened. We await pics.
“As President, Obama forged a close and cooperative partnership with President Xi on issues ranging from growing the global economy to combating climate change, and he looks forward to catching up with his former counterpart,” Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said.
Obama’s visit follows that of current US President Donald Trump who was given “state-visit plus” treatment earlier this month, including taking tea inside the Forbidden City. During his time in Beijing, Trump continued to effusively praise Xi at every opportunity. In a dramatic reversal from his rhetoric on the campaign trail, Trump said that he didn’t blame Chinese leadership for the US trade deficit with China, instead pointing the finger at his own predecessors.
“After all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country for the benefit of its citizens? I give China great credit,” Trump said. “In actuality, I do blame past administrations for allowing this out-of-control trade deficit to take place and to grow.”
Despite the fact that Trump said Xi should be given “a double-sized Big Mac” instead of state dinner prior to his visit to the White House in 2015, he now claims that people say that he and Xi have “the best relationship of any president-president.”
