A panda at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has been given a new name: “TMT Floyd Mayweather,” after the American boxing champion and woman beater.
Mayweather Jr. was in Chengdu last week where he spent 100,000 yuan ($15,000) to adopt a panda, previously called “Maodou” (毛豆) or “Soybean” in English, bestowing it with a new, slightly less-traditional name, “TMT費洛伊德-梅威瑟.” TMT is his personal brand, an abbreviation for “The Money Train.” Money being Floyd’s favorite subject.
Of course, the 40-year-old retired boxer doesn’t actually get to take the panda home with him. It will instead stay at the base where Mayweather’s money will be used to pay for expenses and staff. After one year, the panda will be called Soybean again unless he wants to donate another 100,000 yuan.
Mayweather retired again from boxing earlier this year after defeating Conor McGregor in a much-hyped fight, bringing his record up to 50-0 and earning himself upwards of $350 million in the process. He remains popular and celebrated around the world, despite the fact that he has been charged with seven assaults against five women — including the violent beating of the mother of his children in 2010.
Though he retired as the wealthiest boxer ever, Mayweather claims that rather than coughing up any of his own cash to visit China, he was paid $3 million to take a luxury vacation to the country with 23 of his closest friends. It’s not clear who paid for his China trip, which included a meet-and-greet with fans and stops in Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai.
Here in Beijing, China at “The Great Wall Of China”, considered to be one of the greatest Wonders of The World! It’s always been on my list of places to see throughout my travels in life however, timing is everything. Coming here with 23 people has been a great experience and it doesn’t hurt to get paid $3,000,000. to simply visit and vacation here in luxury for a few days. With money this long, everything is different. I move different, I dress different and I live different because my money is extremely different! i want to thank my cousin @dejuanblake and his @affiliationmanagement company for putting this all together. 「金錢團隊」 Photo credit: @lapistolpete @idriserba videographer: @jamesdayap
