shocking photo has recently been circulating on Chinese social media showing martial arts legend Jet Li looking much more old and frail than his 55 years.
The photo was reportedly taken during a recent trip that Li, a devout Buddhist, paid to a temple in Tibet. The “elderly” man in the photos looks nearly unrecognizable to the star of “Once Upon a Time in China,” “Lethal Weapon 4,” and “The Expendables.”
After seeing the photo, fans from across the globe have voiced their concern about Li’s apparent ill health and have wished for a quick recovery.
Back in 2013, Li revealed for the first time that he had been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in 2010. While Li has taken medication to control the condition, the South China Morning Post reports that he confessed last year that the condition keeps returning.
Li also suffers from a myriad of other illnesses and ailments, many of which were brought on by his years of demanding martial arts and film work. He has said that his doctors have told them if he continues to make movies, he could spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
In recent years, Li has instead devoted his time to his charity project, The One Foundation. His last film appearance was actually in Jack Ma’s vanity kung fu flick last year. Recently, it was reported that he had been cast as the emperor of China in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaption of Mulan.
While some have worried that Li’s health will preclude him from starring in Mulan, his manager, Steven Chasman, has said that the concerns about Li’s health are “much ado about nothing.”
“We appreciate everyone’s concern. But Jet is completely fine,” Chasman told USA Today. “There’s nothing wrong with him. There’s no life-threatening illness. He’s in great shape.”
Chasman added that the Tibetan temple photo of Li had been wildly taken out of context.
“It’s one picture and people are making these interpretations from it,” he said. “If you took a picture me at the wrong angle and wrong time of the day, I could look frail as well.
To prove that Li wasn’t in ill health, Chasman also sent a recent photo of the action film star:
