n Sunday, a young woman took off her shoes on a Wuhan bridge, ready to end her life by leaping into the Yangtze.
Fortunately, as she climbed the railing, Zeng Hanchao, a local bus driver, happened to drive by and notice her. “Don’t jump!” yelled Zeng who quickly stopped the bus and opened the doors. Zeng then rushed out and tried to reason with the distraught young woman. Meanwhile, some passengers sneaked up from behind, grabbing the woman and bringing her back to safety.
Following the rescue operation, Zeng blocked the woman from reapproaching the bridge and forced her onto the bus.
For bus drivers whose routes cross the Yangtze, being on the lookout for suicidal pedestrians has become an important part of the job. In recent years, two bus drivers in Nanjing have made similarly heroic rescues.
