abnormal and apparently harmful sounds being heard by American diplomats in Guangzhou continues to deepen with another two US citizens leaving China after falling victim to a strange sonic sickness with symptoms oddly similar to those felt by US diplomats in Cuba in 2016 and 2017.he mystery of the
Mark A. Lenzi, a security engineering officer at the US consulate in Guangzhou, was flown out of China along with his family on Wednesday after experiencing excruciating headaches which lasted for days at a time, along with chronic sleeplessness, and nausea. Lenzi’s wife experienced these same symptoms and their three-year-old son was affected as well.
Upon his arrival back in the US, Lenzi told the Washington Post that these symptoms began to develop after his family started hearing unusual noises in their apartment last April, which he described as sounding like “marbles bouncing and hitting a floor then rolling on an incline with a static sound.”
Back in April, an unnamed fellow consulate worker was evacuated back to the US after reporting “subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sounds and pressure.” After a medical evaluation, he was diagnosed with a “mild traumatic brain injury” and, on May 23rd, the US State Department issued an ominous warning to US citizens in China, telling them to be wary of “unusual sounds or piercing noises.”
It turns out that this worker was Lenzi’s neighbor at a high-end apartment complex in Guangzhou.
While the department’s statement also claimed that US officials did not know of any other similar situations in China, Lenzi says that this is a complete lie, explaining that he had filed multiple reports about his family’s unusual case with the consulate, embassy, and department.
Lenzi says that he and his colleagues were not notified about his neighbor being evacuated until a month after it happened. He also claims that the department froze out his security clearance after he started to speak up about the situation, making it essentially impossible for him to work.
Because of all this, Lenzi is calling for Ambassador Terry Brandstad’s resignation.
The symptoms described by Lenzi and his family can’t help but call to mind the 22 embassy workers in Havana who reported various unusual and unexplained health problems last year, including hearing loss, memory loss, headaches, fatigue, and nausea.
Initially, these ailments were labeled as the result of a “sonic attack” from some kind of sound device, however, their true cause remains a mystery even after months of investigation. If they were indeed an attack, it’s not clear how they were carried out or by whom.
The same holds true for whatever is going in Guangzhou. While the mysterious illness may initially have been largely written off as an isolated case, that will no longer be possible if more and more Americans are affected, an outcome that would likely do considerable damage to US-China relations at an especially significant time as Donald Trump prepares to head to Singapore to meet with Kim Jong Un.
In response to what happened in Havana, the US expelled a total of 15 Cuban diplomats with Trump saying repeatedly that he believed Cuba was responsible.
