Wonton Don posted a new video this week for Barstool Sports covering his magical trip to Russia to watch Beijing’s Kunlun Red Star, China’s preeminent professional hockey team, play HC CSKA Moscow, in what he termed the “Commie Cup.”hanghai’s own
Although Donnie confesses that he hadn’t been a fan of the Red Stars until he befriended star player Brandon Yip, he does a customarily impressive job of hyping up the Chinese section of the crowd and messing around with the enemy while willing the China team to pull off a second Miracle on Ice.
Which, unfortunately, was not be, with the Red Stars falling by a score of 1-3.
In case you haven’t heard of Donnie, he’s been active in Shanghai since 2012, creating comedic videos while playing the character of a lovably asshole-ish laowai. His crude and brash humor has been applied to a variety of topics in the past, such as the crab wontons on offer at Shanghai’s Cheesecake Factory.
And in case you haven’t heard of the Beijing Kunlun Red Star, you should know that they are part of China’s push to get its people to care about winter sports in time for Beijing hosting the 2022 Olympics. The team was created in 2016, joining the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) where it has muddled in mediocrity.
In an exhibition match prior to their first season, the Red Stars provided China with a rude introduction to the more violent side of hockey when essentially the entire team was beaten up by a single hot-tempered Kazakh defenseman.
