woman from rural Hunan province was arrested last week after allegedly murdering a pair of toddlers with a meat cleaver.
The two children, aged one and three, were discovered missing by their grandmother after she returned home from drawing water from a well on May 18th. The grandma looked high and low for the kids, finally finding their bodies in a latrine pit used by a neighboring family.
Police in Changning county began to suspect one neighbor, 46-year-old Deng Wenyan, of the crime after she disappeared on the same day that the children’s bodies were found. A massive manhunt was initiated and a 100,000 yuan reward offered for information leading to the fugitive’s capture.
After 12 days spent hiding out at an abandoned home about 10 kilometers away from the crime scene, Deng was finally found and arrested on May 30th.
According to police, she admitted to luring the two children into her home before hacking them up with a meat cleaver. However, police failed to explain the woman’s motives for murdering the two children.
Locals believe that the horrific crime may have come because of some trifling dispute, noting that Deng and the children’s family had feuded in the past over issues like stealing food and washing clothes in the well. However, the two parties reportedly hadn’t fought in some time.
The two murdered toddlers were “left-behind children,” being taken care of by their grandparents in the countryside while their parents worked in the mega-city of Shenzhen, trying to provide their kids with a better future.
