arlier this month, a pair of Chinese tourists were asked to leave a Japanese restaurant, told by staff that their behavior had been so horrifying that they didn’t have to pay a single cent.
“You don’t need to pay. Just leave,” a waiter is seen telling the two women in a video which went viral on Chinese social media over the weekend. “It’s really too much, I’ve never seen such disgusting manners before.”
After the video blew up online. Japanese media talked to the waiter at the Gyu-Kaku BBQ restaurant in Osaka. He claimed that the women had chosen the 90-minute buffet option, but had stayed at their table past their time limit. When he went over to confront them, he found that the floor around them was littered with shrimp shells that they had discarded.
Meanwhile, the women tell a different story. In a screencap of a WeChat conversation, one of the women claims that the restaurant had been discriminatory towards them because they were Chinese, treating them somehow differently than the other Japanese customers. The woman claims that when she started filming the waiter, he became especially angry and told them to get out.
You can watch the video on Facebook below:
Or on Tencent Video:
According to the woman, the confrontation ended with them putting down money for their bill on a table and leaving. However, the owner followed them outside and returned the money.
Chinese netizens aren’t quite sure what to make of this scandal. While they are willing to believe that a Japanese restaurant would discriminate against its Chinese guests, the women have failed to present any evidence of discrimination. At the same time, the restaurant also hasn’t aired any photos of the apparent destruction that the two ladies wrought.
Of course, Chinese tourists aren’t exactly known for their good table manners. Back in 2016, a video went viral across the world showinga group of frenzied Chinese tourists using plates as shovels to gather shrimp at a hotel buffetin Thailand.
