footage has made its way onto Chinese social media of lifeless bodies floating through submerged city streets.isturbing
These images and clips come from Guangdong province where a heavy rainstorm last Friday resulted in at least four residents being killed after being electrocuted on the street, apparently because of three cases of shoddy wiring.
Among those dead are a mother and daughter who were electrocuted while standing near a bus stop with an electronic banner in the city of Foshan. The accident resulted in the city cutting off power to all bus stops while the streets remained underwater.
Another casualty was a 17-old-boy in Guangzhou who suddenly collapsed while crossing a flooded road in Guangzhou. It has yet to be confirmed that the boy’s death came because of an electrical shock, however, his father strongly believes that a nearby power box was to blame.
Finally, another man’s body was spotted floating on a submerged street in the city of Zhaoqing, right beside an electrical pole and a large power box. Video from the scene shows a police officer standing on the back of a truck and using a long stick to drag the body away from the area and towards rescuers. After being taken out of the water, the man was rushed to the hospital where his life could not be saved.
The deaths have understandably frightened residents of Guangzhou and its surrounding cities, with many calling for officials to be held responsible for the accidents. Meanwhile, public PSAs have been set out, warning residents to exercise the utmost caution when going outside during torrential downpours, advising them to stay away from anything electrical and not to try to rescue on their own anyone who they suspect may have been electrocuted.
