man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for embezzling almost $1.5 million from his employer—money which he gave as “tips” to various women working in China’s profitable live-streaming industry.
The 29-year-old surnamed Wang made 3,000 yuan a month working as an accountant for a property developer in the Jiangsu city of Zhenjiang. However, he managed to pad his income a bit by embezzling a whopping 9.3 million yuan ($1.4 million) from his company between October 2015 and February 2017.
Much of this money went to webcam girls with three of them reportedly receiving 1.5 million yuan each from Wang. One of these lucky women has been identified as Feng Timo, an aspiring singer and one of the most popular live-stream hosts on douyu.com. She also boasts over 7 million followers on Weibo.
Police say that Wang, who is a married man, also used the funds to help carry out affairs with some of the camgirls, making regular trips to Shanghai and staying at hotels there.
However, his glamorous life of sleeping with beautiful young women came to a sudden end last February when his suspicious employer ordered an audit. Soon afterward, while sharing a Shanghai hotel room with one webcam girl, he tried to kill himself.
Wang’s suicide attempt was not successful and he later turned himself in to police.
Chinese authorities are reportedly unable to force the live-stream hosts to return the embezzled money that Wang gave to them, so, along with being sentenced to seven years behind bars, Wang has also been ordered to pay his employer back.
