Fan Bingbing tax evasion drama, a number of officials have been punished for their “poor management” of the star’s mysterious and high-profile case.n the latest twist in the
Yesterday, China’s official Xinhua news agency announced that a total of five officials at the Wuxi tax bureau in Jiangsu province had received official warnings and demotions regarding their alleged mismanagement of Fan’s case. The report failed to actually explain what the officials had done wrong, instead urging the tax office to “profoundly reflect” on the case and take practical measures to rectify itself.
On Chinese social media, some have speculated that the officials are being punished because they did not deal harshly enough with Fan. Last week, it was announced that the actress would avoid prison time if she pays 883 million yuan ($129 million) in back taxes and fees.
Afterward, Fan took to Weibo to apologize for her mistakes and announce that she would try to pay the enormous sum.
It was the first time that Fan had made a peep on social media since early June. Over the following few months, the mysterious disappearance of China’s biggest star became one of the most talked about stories in the country with rumors circulating that she had been arrested, banned from acting, and even that she had sought asylum in the United.
Fan got into trouble with authorities over her use of so-called “yin-yang contracts,” wherein she would receive two separate contracts for the same film project, one of which would be reported to authorities, the other would not, thus helping her sidestep millions in taxes.
Of course, it seems unlikely that Fan was the only star in China using these kinds of contracts. Earlier today, China officially announced that it was launching a campaign against tax evasion in the television and film industries.
Chinese authorities have given other actors, studios, and production companies a grace period of until the end of the year to “correct” their own tax filings before they will face penalties and punishment for their malfeasance.
